Mad March Weather

Can I just say how weird the weather is here? It reminds me of Alaska, from what Mom and Dad told me. If you don't like the weather, just wait a few minutes and it will change.

A few days ago it started out bright and sunny, a happy 50 degrees or so. Eventually it rained (what a surprise!), then went back to sunny, and as the day went on it became much colder, dropping down in the 30s. And it snowed.

Today was similar. I walked with my housemate Torsten over to Fisherwick Church at 1:30 to eat a free student lunch, and the sky was bright blue with only a few clouds. Nice and sunny, maybe 50 degrees. After lunch we walked back to Mount Charles with Elisabeth and Nicolas, and suddenly realized the sky had gotten dark. Rainclouds loomed on the horizon, a dark metallic blue. Halfway back to the dorms it started to HAIL. Yeah. Hail. Tiny bits of frozen ice attacking any bare skin like little needles. The stiff wind didn't help. Soon we were cowering in a huddled group by one of the university gates, shielding our faces and complaining loudly. It was Torsten who pointed out how silly we must have looked. Everyone else was going about their business--armed with umbrellas or hoods--looking perhaps a bit disgruntled, but nowhere near as bewildered as we were by the sudden change in weather.

I've given up sticking my head out the window in the morning to see what the weather will be like; it simply isn't reliable data. Layers and a miniature umbrella are my weapons against this fickle March weather.

Cheers,
~Catherine
